  10.          HAYES SUPPORTS V.42bis STANDARD APPROVED BY THE CCITT

  12.         ATLANTA, GA., October 2, 1989 - Hayes Microcomputer Products,
  13. Inc. today announced support of CCITT V.42bis for the company's 
  14. V-series system products.  This announcement signifies the company's 
  15. immediate product response to the newest standard for advanced features
  16. in modems, which was approved by the CCITT Study Group XVII on 
  17. September 29, 1989.

  19.         V.42bis specifies the data compression technique used to
  20. increase throughput of modems incorporating the LAPM error-control 
  21. protocol, bringing an average of three-to-one data compression 
  22. capabilities and as much as four-to-one on some files to the V-series 
  23. system products.  The standard is based on the popular Lempel-Ziv 
  24. compression algorithm developed by AT&T Bell Laboratories, and includes
  25. enhancements proposed by IBM, British Telecom PLC, and Hayes.

  27.         In addition, Hayes has signed a letter of intent to enter into
  28. a patent license agreement with Unisys Corporation.  Terms of the 
  29. agreement call for a one-time license fee under Unisys' U.S. Patent 
  30. 4,558,302, which was named for the inventor who first encouraged use of
  31. Lempel-Ziv technology earlier in the decade.  Unisys' timely response 
  32. to licensing requests following the CCITT's approval of V.42bis 
  33. combined with the company's nominal fee made it possible for Hayes to 
  34. utilize this technology.

  36.         Beginning December 1, customers who currently have V-series
  37. system products with V.42 may upgrade to V.42bis through Hayes Customer
  38. Service.  If the product was purchased prior to September 1, there will
  39. be a $50 charge for the upgrade.  Anyone purchasing the product after 
  40. September 1, or anyone who has previously upgraded the V-series system 
  41. product to V.42 will receive the upgrade at no cost.
